Former Seacom executive, Willem Marais, has been appointed managing group executive for African telecoms company Liquid Telecom, and will also serve as CEO of the group's South African arm.

Marais, who has over 20 years of experience in the telecoms industry, will be responsible for all Liquid Telecom's global wholesale data business across the service provider market and will also head Liquid Telecom's business operations in SA.

Prior to joining Liquid Telecom Group, Marais held the position of chief commercial officer at subsea cable company Seacom, as well as a number of senior positions with the Siemens group of companies.

Last February, when Seacom underwent a management shakeup, Marais was promoted to global head of sales.

Liquid Telecom CEO Nic Rudnick says Marais has a "great track record" of developing long-term customer partnerships and leading negotiations with large scale wholesale telecommunication infrastructure transactions in Europe, Middle East and Africa. "[This] makes him perfect for this important position within our company."

Liquid Telecom provides independent data, voice and IP in eastern, central and southern Africa. It supplies fibre optic, satellite and international carrier services to Africa's largest mobile network operators, Internet service providers and businesses of all sizes.

The pan-African group also provides payment solutions to financial institutions and retailers, as well as data storage and communication solutions to businesses across Africa and abroad.

In addition to its Mauritius-based holding company, the Liquid Telecom group has eight operating companies across the continent - in Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia, Zimbabwe and the UK.
