The second annual Break.Make.Create Hackathon will take place this year in Johannesburg, under the theme 'Nine to Five'.

Last year, the first hackathon took place in Cape Town under the theme 'Hack for Music'. The hackathon is the brainchild of digital agency Hellocomputer, and is open to all agency workers and other creatives.

"Break.Make.Create 2014 in Cape Town was the first of Hellocomputer's hacks open to the broader industry and public," says Hellocomputer executive creative director Mark Tomlinson.

"It was a huge success, with the teams interpreting the 'Hack for Music' theme to come up with ideas such as musical chairs with a twist, musical shoes and a Lego-inspired DJ set. Team 'The Sound and the Fury' came out on top by making a computer game controlled by hacked musical instruments. I'm looking forward to seeing what this year's teams make of 'Nine to Five'."

This year, Break.Make.Create moves to Johannesburg and, in keeping with its reputation as the 'City of Industry', the theme centres around working life. Participants will hack the daily grind, whether it's work, study or other. Hack a printer, a desk or even a colleague - as long as it's work-related, anything goes, says Tomlinson.

There will be a cash prize for the winning team and all ideas developed over the weekend remain the intellectual property of those who came up with them.

The Hackathon takes place on 4 and 5 September at the Digital Innovation Zone in Braamfontein. It will be limited to 10 teams competing for a first place prize of R10 000 while the runners-up will walk away with R5 000.
