Following the announcement yesterday that Dell has agreed to buy EMC for $67 billion, Carl Eschenbach, president and COO of VMware, says his company will remain a publicly traded entity.

"Part of our strategy is to make sure VMware remains independent. Although EMC will go private, VMware will remain public."

It makes sense for VMware to remain successful, as this is essential for Dell to be able to pay the massive debt it incurred to help finance the purchase, he added.

He said VMware will expand on its partnership with Dell and EMC to drive synergies in the market, and help accelerate the growth of VMware, particularly where the software-defined data centre and hybrid cloud are concerned.

"VMware will continue to drive significant innovation, and leverage on the massive market presence enjoyed by both Dell and EMC.

"There are really exciting times ahead, but there is a lot to be worked out as we work towards closing the transaction, which we estimate will take around nine months," noted Eschenbach.

Speaking to the audience at VMWorld 2015 Europe in Barcelona through a video recorded yesterday, Dell founder and CEO Michael Dell said: "It's been a busy couple of days; however, I did not want to miss this opportunity to say how excited we are about plans to unite Dell and EMC."

From converged infrastructure to digital transformation, software-defined data centre, hybrid cloud, mobile and security, the combined company will deliver solutions needed to compete and win in the data economy, added Dell.

"The possibilities before us are incredible, and VMware leads the way, as an amazing source of innovation, for our cloud-based, connected world.

"Dell and VMware have been close partners for a long time, and we've been a proud diamond sponsor of VMWorld for many years. We look forward to working closely with VMware, good friend and partner Pat Gelsinger, the entire VMware team and VMware's powerful ecosystem to help drive continued innovation for customers," concluded Dell.
