MTN says the outage was caused when an error occurred during a planned migration of data centre equipment.

A data connection issue affecting MTN subscribers has been resolved and data services have been restored, says the operator.

MTN had to apologise to customers once again after data connectivity issues left its users unable to connect to the Internet or use any data-related apps since yesterday.

"During the process of a planned migration of data centre equipment an error occurred, which resulted in the data connectivity issue," MTN said in a statement a short while ago.

The data connectivity issues started at around 2pm on 5 May and MTN says MTN Business corporate clients were also affected by the intermittent connectivity issue.

The latest connectivity issue comes after one million voice, SMS and data customers throughout SA were affected by sustained network downtime in February. The previous "intermittent connection issues" caused havoc on the MTN network for several days.

At the time, the mobile giant said the issue was caused by "a malfunction on a network node that carries traffic for subscribers who were affected".

The company did not disclose how many subscribers were affected by the most recent issue.

Web site downdetector.co.za had over 320 complaints from MTN subscribers logged between 2pm and around 5pm yesterday. Reports of network issues continued throughout the night and spiked again this morning between 7am and 10am.
