Internet browser Opera has introduced a free and unlimited virtual private network (VPN) app for Android, available from the Google Play store.

According to the company, the Opera VPN app for Android follows the iOS version that was rolled out globally in May.

The iOS app has already been downloaded by more than a million users, says Opera.

The app lets people enhance their online privacy, block ad-tracking cookies, access more online content, extend the geographical reach of apps and test the security of WiFi networks, it says.

"The Opera VPN app for Android sets itself apart from other VPNs by offering a completely free service ? without a data limit, no log-in required, advanced WiFi protection features and no need for a subscription," says Chris Houston, president of Opera's VPN division.

Houston adds: "Opera has also incorporated a Viking in the app...The Opera VPN app can unlock online borders and is the closest thing to a Viking shield that today's mobile users have for virtual self-protection."

Opera says the VPN app has a WiFi test tool to enhance online privacy. The tool will scan a WiFi network to check if it's public or private. If it's encrypted, it establishes how many other devices share the same connection, if the IP address and the location are exposed, and if others can monitor or sniff device details.

"If the test tool detects any weaknesses, it will advise the user to enable the VPN.

"The test tool gives a score from A, which means the network is secure, to F, which means the network is not secure and the user should proceed with extra caution."
