Adv. Pansy Tlakula, chairperson, Information Regulator for the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act

Faith Dikeledi Pansy Tlakula grew up in the township of Evaton in the Vaal area. She obtained her undergraduate degree in law at the University of the North( now University of Limpopo).She then went on to study further at Wits, where she obtained her LLB and later Harvard University, where she obtained her LL.M.

From 1995, Tlakula has held high profile positions in several organisations including commissioner of the South Africa Human Rights Commission from 1995 to 2002, Chairperson of the Board of the National Credit Regulator, Chairperson of Council of the then University of the North West ( now North West University) and the Chancellor of the Vaal University of Technology. She was also Independent Non Executive Director of the Bidvest Group Limited and the Chief Electoral Officer and Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). Tlakula is currently the Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights ( AU Organ) and its Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa. She is also the chair of the newly-formed information regulator.
