Although the Samsung Galaxy S4 is only a few months old, the company has reportedly already started working on its successor.

The Electronic Times has revealed what could be the first specs of the Samsung Galaxy S5. The latest report claims the Galaxy S5 will feature a 16MP camera, upgrading from the S4's 13MP sensor and matching the Galaxy S4 Zoom's 16MP.

The Galaxy S5 is also expected to come with an optical image stabiliser, a function that was reportedly originally meant to be used for the Galaxy Note 3, but could not be implemented at the time due to problems with parts supply.

The report adds once development of the 16MP module is complete, it is likely to become the basic standard for the company's smartphones in the future.

Last month, patent images of what is believed to be the Galaxy S5 were leaked, although they did not reveal much detail. The images showed off a rectangular shape, but with edges that are slanted, diverting from Samsung's current look found on the Galaxy S3 and S4.

Another source also claimed the S5 will sport a full aluminium body, a look that is supposedly expected to be seen in all high-end Samsung smartphones from now on.

Tech analyst Liron Segev says although details of the Galaxy S5 features are sketchy, it is likely the company will take the features that worked well in the S4 and enhance them or simply carry the features across to its successor.

"I assume a lot of the [improvements] are going to have to do more with the interface and the software, rather than revolutionary design changes," says Segev.

He notes that high-end phones generally feature the same aspects in terms of a fast processor, lots of RAM, expandable memory and long battery life. "Some are a little bit better, some a little bit worse, but basically they are all on par. What is going to differentiate [the S5] is things you can do with it, like more lifestyle apps, etc."
