A gas leak in one of Internet Solutions' Bryanston data centres could be the cause of an outage some customers experienced on Wednesday.

The company's GM for managed services Sean Nourse, says that customers are back up and running, and the company is investigating the cause of the outage. Yesterday, several customers reported to IS that they were experiencing hard drive failure in their racks at the centre.

According to Nourse, the failure could have stemmed from a leak of gas usually used to put out fires in centre. “The cause of the failure in the fire suppression system is still unknown, and it is not clear whether the hard drive failure and the suppression system failure are connected,” he explains.

He says 11 customers saw failures in at least one of their hard drives, however, these customers all paid for redundancy services and are back up and running. However, at least three customers did not have backup drives and experienced total failure.

IS says an investigation into the incedent is underway and will most likely be completed by next week. “We will be able to give more information about the failures then,” he says.
