MWeb Connect opened its second retail outlet yesterday, located in Cape Town, as part of an overall strategy to ensure it is “in the customer's face as much as possible”, says MWeb Connect's head of sales, Peter Wojciechowicz.

The store, situated in the up-market Canal Walk shopping centre, lags the opening of MWeb's first store in the northern Johannesburg shopping mecca, Cresta, by two years. A third store is to be opened in Centurion and plans are afoot for other stores to be located around the country.

Wojciechowicz says MWeb Connect is revamping its overall sales strategy, but that the retail outlets have been planned for some time.

“It is part of the need by South African consumers to experience something before they buy it. They also need guidance and so the retail stores offer an educational experience too,” he adds.

Carolyn Holgate, GM of MWeb Connect, says: “In its simplest form, we're making the Internet 'real' for customers and giving them an opportunity to interact with the MWeb brand. Some customers may feel overwhelmed when faced with the myriad of Internet and technology options available to them, and the MWeb stores give customers an opportunity to ask advice and try out different offerings before making a purchasing decision.”

She adds that more technologically-savvy customers can also experience the latest in online technology and products, which will also be available in-store.

“The MWeb stores are geared to show customers how they can get the best out of their Internet experience. With the launch of uncapped ADSL earlier this year, we believe even more customers will start exploring their options and will want to start experiencing the Internet like the rest of the world does,” Holgate concludes.
