Siemens wins $10-million telecoms contract in Burkina Faso

Johannesburg, 19 Sept 2000

Siemens Telecommunications has won a contract, to the value of over $10-million, with network operator, MSI Cellular Investments, to supply the equipment and infrastructure for a GSM mobile network in Burkina Faso.

This brings to five the number of networks Siemens has supplied to MSI in Africa - the former including Celtel Uganda, Zamcell in Zambia, Celtel Malawi and Celtel Congo Brazzaville.

The network will have an initial capacity of 30 000 subscribers, operating from approximately 20 base stations. The largest supplier of cellular infrastructure in Africa, Siemens will provide full support and infrastructure for the network, which includes switching and transmission systems, base stations, DC power, generator sets, shelters and towers.

The rollout of the network is divided into two phases - the first bringing service to the capital city, Ouagadougou, and Bobo-Dioulasso by October 2000, while Phase Two will see the completion of the initial network by December 2000.
