IBM and Rational Software Corporation, represented locally by CCH Software Development, have announced an agreement to jointly develop, market and sell software that allows all members of an e-business development project, including analysts, developers and testers to reliably build, deploy and manage e-business applications as a team.
The agreement extends the existing IBM/Rational application development alliance, delivering tighter integration between IBM`s development environments and Rational`s software configuration management (SCM) products. The agreement gives customers a full set of tools for developing next generation e-business applications for IBM WebSphere Application Servers.
"This agreement is good news for IBM customers and presents an attractive opportunity to adopt Rational`s ClearCase and ClearQuest SCM solution, which IDC has identified as the market revenue-leader for the last three years," says Dick Heiman, an analyst at IDC. "The combination of Rational`s SCM solution with IBM`s e-business application development tools will help accelerate the development of mission critical e-business applications."
Rational and IBM are also collaborating on the use of WebDAV, an industry-standard mechanism for platform independent sharing of data and collaboration over the Web, within their respective development and SCM offerings. This will enhance Rational`s SCM offering by further promoting more transparent integration with IBM development tools. Rational`s and IBM`s work on WebDAV reflects both companies` continued commitment to open industry standards including XML and XMI.
"As the pressure to quickly deliver high-quality e-business applications increases, the need will increase for more developers to build these applications as a team," says Joe Damassa, VP of marketing execution for transformation and integration, IBM Software Group. Rational`s ClearCase and ClearQuest products, along with IBM`s VisualAge family are IBM`s preferred tools for building e-business applications of the future."
Specific to the announcement, Rational and IBM will strengthen integration between Rational`s SCM solution and IBM`s VisualAge family by incorporating technology from IBM`s VisualAge TeamConnection into future versions of Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuest. IBM and Rational will also deliver Rational ClearCase on OS/390 to provide a single point of control for software artifacts in both distributed and OS/390 environments. This will help customers transition to e-business by providing a consistent environment for managing change to software artifacts that compose e-business software systems across OS/390, Windows, and Unix operating systems.
