Derek 'The Bandit' Richardson, formerly of 5fm and now from Jacaranda 94.7, has started podcasting music sets.

Podcasting allows you to listen to the show on mobile devices when and where you want to, he notes.

In association with Blackdot IT solutions, Richardson's first show went live on the SoundRepublic Web site on Monday.

The first show, of an hour-and-a-half, features local dance sets, a gaming feature, trance music, motivational speaker Justin Cohen and a chill-out session.

"When I left 5fm in March last year there was no outlet for electronic music," Richardson says.

He plans to make future hour-long podcasts available once a month, depending on the reaction he receives.

Richardson, a 5fm DJ for 17 years, now hosts a Saturday night show devoted to 80s remixes on Jacaranda 94.7.

"It will be a platform to promote the 'Derek The Bandit' brand," he says, adding that the technology has made it possible for him to showcase the best in local talent.

He believes that podcasting offers unprecedented opportunities in music distribution and consumption. "With bandwidth becoming less of a problem in SA with the fast growing world of ADSL at home and at work, the podcasting phenomenon is catching on in a big way," he says.

From a commercial perspective, Richardson hopes the popularity of the site will lead to advertising contracts.
