The municipal elections` voter registration got off to a good start with South Africans utilising the Independent Electoral Commission`s (IEC`s) call centre, SMS and online information facilities.

Although the final figures for the voter registration drive last Saturday are not yet available, initial projections indicate just over 800 000 new and re-registrations. The IEC`s target for the day was 800 000.

From 30 June the IEC received 153 945 enquiries via its SMS facility, the call centre has reported about 100 000 calls from people enquiring about their registration status and the Web site has recorded 1 516 051 page impressions.

People not yet registered to vote in the elections can register at their municipal electoral office between Monday and Friday during office hours.

To verify whether they are registered, voters can SMS their identity number to 32810 or call the IEC on 0800 11 8000. Alternatively they can visit www.elections.org.za.
