Citrix Systems group VP Scott Herren has outlined the company`s next-generation application virtualisation technology built for Microsoft Vista, formerly known by its code-name Longhorn.

Speaking to delegates at the opening of the Citrix iForum in Las Vegas on Monday, Herren unveiled the "Constellation" project, designed for the next release of Microsoft`s Windows Server (also named Windows Vista), which is to be launched in 2006.

The technology, he said, represents Citrix`s vision for the future of application virtualisation, and comprises technologies that have been under development for the past two years.

Constellation includes several features, including autonomic load management, which provide data load-balancing for a better end-user experience, through optimising server resource utilisation.

The product, Herren said, also features proactive system management capabilities, through a policy-based session recording function. This, he said, will not only provide forensic value for IT administrators, but will also form part of technical support and compliance solutions.

Other features offered by the Constellation technology will include graphics acceleration for improved application performance for all application types, including graphics-intensive applications.

In addition, the technology will enable system health monitoring for resilience, problem isolation and fault tolerance, as well as monitoring and management of service level agreements through end-to-end visibility and reporting, including user experience monitoring.

Herren told delegates that Citrix was recently awarded the Microsoft Global ISV Partner of the Year Award, and the two companies have concluded a five-year collaboration agreement. This, he said, will allow the companies to continue working together closely, and ensure strategic and technical synergies.
