The youngest member of the South African mobile gaming team - and the only female team member - has won a gold medal in the World Cyber Games.

Fifteen-year-old Tamaryn Brooke-Smith from Paarl in the Western Cape defeated competitors in the Chopper Rescue game to win a gold medal and $2 000 in prize money.

She was one of the first South African teams to be sent to the world mobile gaming competition, which was run as a standalone event at the World Cyber Games in Singapore last week.

The other team members were Werner De Lange, playing in the Goolie competition; Ethen Reuben, playing in Mid-Town Madness; and Christo Janse van Vuuren, playing the Bruce Lee game. They were sponsored by Exactmobile and First National Bank.

Started as the World Cyber Challenge in 2000, the World Cyber Games was first officially held in 2001. It has grown to be the world`s largest computer and video games festival, having more than 800 gamers from over 70 countries for the 2005 final in Singapore.
