Dimension Data has bought IT solutions company Nexus for an undisclosed amount, in a deal that boosts its US operations by 40%.

The transaction, announced yesterday evening, also "significantly increases the company's presence in the West, Southwest and Southeast regions of the country," it says in a statement.

This is the second significant purchase by Dimension Data this year, and follows its R24.4 billion acquisition by Japan-based NTT in 2010.

Earlier this year, the group - which turns over $6 billion a year - bought NextiraOne for an undisclosed sum, which expanded its presence in Europe. Nexus, founded in 2004 and headquartered in California, provides advanced IT solutions to enterprises, mid-sized business and public sector clients, specifically in the education, retail, hospitality and healthcare sectors.

Dimension Data says the deal provides clients with access to a deeper network of experts and a broader portfolio of solutions. Nexus has 19 offices in California, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Washington, Texas, Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina.

Nexus provides services and solutions in the data centre, collaboration, enterprise networks, security and cloud spaces.

Dimension Data CEO Brett Dawson says the purchase is a "significant strategic step in enhancing the group's geographic coverage and depth of skills and capabilities to support our clients". The deal adds 657 Nexus staff to Dimension Data's employee base.

The group aims to double revenue to $12 billion within about the next four years and will do so through focusing on five recently-defined units: networking, data centres, converged communications, security, and end-user computing, its smallest unit at the moment.
