Government has established a ministry of telecommunications and postal services, naming Siyabonga Cwele as its new head.

Speaking at the announcement of his new Cabinet this evening, president Jacob Zuma named Cwele - former minister of state security - as Yunus Carrim's replacement.

"We have established a new communications ministry which will be responsible for overarching communication policy and strategy, information dissemination and publicity, as well as the branding of the country abroad," said Zuma.

He added the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa, the SA Broadcasting Corporation, Government Communication and Information Systems, Brand SA, and the Media Development and Diversity Agency would fall under the new ministry.

A new Department of Communications will deal specifically with government communication, with Faith Muthambi as its minister.

Meanwhile, former home affairs minister Naledi Pandor takes the helm at the Department of Science and Technology, while Malusi Gigaba fills the post she vacated.

Gigaba was the previous minister of public enterprises.

Collins Chabane takes over from Lindiwe Sisulu as the head of the Department of Public Service and Administration. Chabane was formerly a minister in the Presidency.
