Google Maps is on the list of Africa Internet Holdings' top five apps.

Africa Internet Holdings has put together a list of applications it says will help people "cruise" through life in an easier fashion.

All the apps are linked to motoring, from owning a car to navigating, parking and insurance. Its recommendations may not do the actual driving, but will help avoid daily traffic jams, it says.

1. Carmudi
Carmudi, founded in 2013, is an African Internet Holdings company and available in several countries, although not yet in SA. It is a marketplace that offers buyers, sellers and car dealers a platform to find cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles online, with more than 200 000 listings. It also offers the option of sharing a choice on social networks, allowing people to get a second opinion from friends and family.

2. Google Maps
Google Maps, the Android-based mobile app, is available across the globe and will help lost motorists find their way.

3. Trapster
Traffic jams are nothing but a nuisance and they can be the reason for missing important meetings and events. The Trapster app is a map-based alert system which informs drivers about the annoyance of a road build-up. It is called "Trapster" because it allows users to add information to a desktop version warning other drivers about "traps" on particular roads.

4. Sygic
Sygic works with GPS only and allows users to store high-quality TomTom maps on an iPhone or iPad.

5. Discovery Insure
Discovery Insure has released a new smartphone app, available on the App Store and Google Play store, which scientifically measures how South Africans drive. Customers who download the app and drive safely between 1 June and 31 August 2014 can win a share of R1 million in fuel vouchers or a trip for four to the 2015 Monaco Grand Prix.
