More than 200 free Internet sites have been set up in Tshwane's second phase of its WiFi initiative.

The City of Tshwane and non-profit organisation (NPO) Project Isizwe have launched the second phase of its free WiFi initiative, with 213 new free Internet zones (FIZs) sites coming online, including schools in the Atteridgeville, Mamelodi and Soshanguve townships.

Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa says the move will position the city as "an e-Capital of excellence and a driver of education in the country aligned to the creation of a Smart city and a knowledge economy".

Project Isizwe says the FIZs allow users with WiFi enabled devices to access the Internet without any logins or passwords.

A fair use policy limits users to a data cap of 250MB per device per day and prohibits access to pornographic Web sites.

The NPO says users can also access Tobetsa - a specialized content portal including research and educational Web sites such as Wikipedia, Siyavula and Fundza.

Job-seeking users can use the portal to browse Gumtree, which includes CV-writing and interview tips.

The third phase of the project will launch in August and will comprise of 400 sites and capacity to cater to 2 million users, with an emphasis on healthcare facilities throughout low-income communities.

"By July 2015, the city aims to have capacity for at least 3 million users on public access free WiFi, covering all clinics, schools, parks, sports clubs and other public spaces, enabling its citizens to find jobs, start businesses and educate themselves online," says the NPO.
