Telkom's plans to cut jobs have met stern resistance from labour unions.

Telkom has announced its restructuring plans will go ahead, following consultations between the company's management and labour force.

Tensions flared with trade union Solidarity recently as the telco forged ahead with retrenchment plans, amid details emerging that employment equity would be applied in the job cutting process.

According to a statement released today, Telkom will next week proceed with restructuring, including offering voluntary severance packages (VSPs) and voluntary early retirement packages (VERPs) to some of its management staff.

Telkom's full statement reads as follows:

"After extensive facilitated consultations and deliberations, management and labour have, in the spirit of cooperation, reconciliation and acting in the best interest of all parties, reached consensus that the current restructuring process will proceed.

"The parties have agreed that the process of placing employees, and VSP/VERP's for all management, will proceed next week,"
