Improving business agility is among the main reasons for cloud adoption, says Jon Tullett, senior editor: news analysis at ITWeb.

A successful shift to cloud computing involves, among other considerations, identifying the current business and IT issues that need to be addressed, understanding the risks and making the right infrastructure decisions for the business.

Moving to the cloud can reduce costs, while meeting the need for the improved computing resources required to drive business, says Jon Tullett, senior editor: news analysis at ITWeb. "Among the primary reasons CIOs implement cloud computing strategies, which has been borne out by several research houses, is to improve their business agility," he says.

"And, while there are companies who haven't seen any significant advantages and who may in fact have disrupted their business operations by adopting the cloud, there is an increasing number who have increased their competitive edge and seen real benefits."

Among these are MTN and Finbond, which will unpack their success stories for the benefit of delegates at the upcoming ITWeb Cloud Computing 2014 conference in Johannesburg, in September.

These presentations will be delivered as part of a comprehensive look at all the issues CIOs need to take cognisance of, including safeguarding data in the cloud, negotiating cloud contracts, how to correctly compile a business case for the shift, and current research on how CIOs perceive cloud computing.

"Access to relevant local success stories and topical South African research are among the many benefits local companies can realise by attending this event. It's no longer about the hype - it's about how to make new business happen," says Tullett.

ITWeb Cloud Computing 2014 will focus on the cloud evolution, highlighting the survival of the fittest - the business practices, consistently achieving success through adopting cloud practices - and the specific obstacles and dead ends, with a particular emphasis on the South African challenges and opportunities.
