Standard Bank has advised users to turn to its Internet banking service as it works to get its smartphone app back up and running.

The recently-updated mobile app was unavailable since yesterday, with many users unable to log on, while the bank noted it was urgently working on resolving problems.

"Standard Bank is aware that some customers have experienced difficulty accessing our banking app for smartphones. We apologise for the inconvenience, and we are working on resolving the issue as a matter of urgency," the bank said.

The revamped app for Android and iOS devices includes a new design and personalised views of accounts.

The bank said the update was in line with its move to "offer convenience and ease of use within a safe environment".

Users took to social media, requesting assistance from the bank after encountering errors when trying to access their accounts. One Twitter user's screenshot had the message: "Could not connect to the server. Please retry later".

Another user noted he was "prompted to update the mobile banking on my phone and the new one doesn't work. Can't access my acc".

The bank also received numerous complains of users unable to receive one-time PIN numbers.
