Vodacom has zero-rated five Web sites as part of a broader programme that supports free access to educational resources.

Until March 2015, Vodacom users will be able to access and browse five sites that have been approved by the Department of Education for free and regardless of whether or not they have a positive balance on their data or airtime. "You will only use and be charged for the data or airtime you use when downloading or uploading to and from these sites," says the operator.

The following Web sites apply:

* Vodacom Foundation: http://digitalclassroom.co.za

* Mindset Learn: http://www.mindset.co.za/learn/

* Everything Maths books: http://www.everythingmaths.co.za/@@textbook-catalogue

* Everything Science books : http://www.everythingscience.co.za/@@textbook-catalogue

* Department of Basic Education : http://www.education.gov.za/dobeinternet/learners/tabid/271/Default.aspx

Vodacom spokesperson Richard Boorman says the zero-rated sites move is the first part of a larger programme the company is putting together and more details will be announced at a later stage.

He says the operator is looking at the possibility of supplying free access to Wikipedia as part of that wider programme. "Our key overall concern is to provide access to resources relevant to the schools curriculum."

Vodacom's overall education drive has involved equipping 40 ICT teacher training centres across the country and equipping almost 900 schools with ICT resources.
