Uber, the app that connects passengers with drivers, is now available in more than 200 cities worldwide.

With launches in 24 new markets, the Uber network is now available in 205 cities across 45 countries and six continents. It covers more than 100 cities in the US, 10 cities in India, six in China and this month rolled out in 43 more cities across the globe.

However, in response to e-mail questions from ITWeb, Uber said it cannot share figures regarding statistics in SA.

According to Alon Lits, GM for Uber Johannesburg, the company is, nonetheless, making thousands of trips a week, and growing in SA.

"Our goal is to match supply with demand and the demand is there. The seamless experience means users never have to worry about finding a ride or having cash," says Lits.

He adds that the local response to the app and the uptake has been positive. Last month, the company launched its low-cost pricing range UberX in Johannesburg alongside its high-end UberBlack service, which has been available since August last year.

"Passengers love the convenience and safety of the app as they always know a driver's info before getting into a car and for them, it also means knowing that every driver on the Uber platform is thoroughly screened," says Lits.

Travellers also have the ability to share their estimated time of arrival and route with family and friends. For drivers, it means economic empowerment as Uber's lead-generation software facilitates a powerful entrepreneurship opportunity.

Uber's mission is to transform the way people connect with their communities and to bring reliability, convenience and opportunity to transport systems, he says.

According to Uber, 45 of the world's 100 most populous cities still don't have Uber and the company's focus now is to take its transport revolution to those cities and more.

The most recent European cities in which Uber has been unveiled include Warsaw, Prague, Istanbul, Beirut, Gothenburg and Lisbon.
