MTN plans to retrench 847 staff members.

Trade union Solidarity claims MTN has agreed to have its consultation process extended as the operator proceeds with its retrenchment process.

In a statement released today, Solidarity said the operator finally gave in to its request for extension of the process, which affects 20 of its members.

The full statement reads as follows:

"MTN's management finally acceded to Solidarity's request to extend the company's retrenchment process. Consultations concerning the retrenchment process have been extended by another month and will commence this coming Monday officially.

"Twenty Solidarity members are currently being affected by the retrenchments.

"In August, the cellphone network service provider indicated in a section 189 notice to employees that it intends to retrench up to 847 members of staff in managerial positions.

"The company states its poor returns and growth as reason for the intended retrenchments."

Marius Croucamp, Solidarity's head of the communications industry, said the extension of the consultation process allows for thorough and fair consultation.

"During the retrenchment consultations, Solidarity will focus on limiting the impact of the retrenchments as far as possible. In addition, Solidarity will try to negotiate the best possible alternatives for our members.

"Furthermore, we will do our best to help our members get back on their feet again in the shortest possible time," Croucamp said.
