Telkom has announced the appointment of Deon Fredericks as CFO, cementing a position he has held in an acting capacity since his predecessor Jacques Schindeh"utte was suspended in October last year.

In a statement released today, the telco says the appointment is effective immediately.

Last month, the telco defended Schindeh"utte's early retirement, saying it was in line with the company's policy, and freed the team up to focus on commercial aspects.

Meanwhile, disciplinary hearings into his conduct - which stemmed from allegations leveled against him by an anonymous whistle-blower - were suspended upon his retirement.

Responding to Fredericks' appointment, CEO Sipho Maseko noted the new CFO has demonstrated his "expert ability" since stepping into the role late last year. "He has been at the helm for the past 10 months playing an instrumental role in Telkom's transformation journey and has been integral to restoring the financial health of the company.

"Deon's prudent and considered approach makes him the ideal candidate for the position and a sound addition to our executive leadership team," said Maseko.

According to Telkom, Fredericks has held senior positions at the company since 1993, including the position of deputy CFO in 2011. He has also held various directorships at companies including Vodacom, Trudon and the Telkom Retirement Fund.

Fredericks is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Chartered Institute of Management of Accountants in the United Kingdom, said Telkom.
