Vumatel has identified a further 42 Johannesburg and Cape Town suburbs where it will deploy fibre to the home.

Vumatel, which last month partnered with Vox Telecom and two other companies to deploy fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband in Parkhurst, Johannesburg, has identified a further 42 suburbs in Johannesburg and Cape Town where similar projects will be undertaken.

The company says on its Web site it has identified 42 suburbs in the two cities for "residents to express their support" to commence with the project. "We have decided to start our deployments initially in certain parts of Johannesburg and Cape Town. There will be more to follow."

Vumatel previously explained its partnership with Vox is part of its continued commitment to provide high-speed, reliable connectivity to consumers and businesses.

"This partnership represents the start of our vision of deploying an open-access-based alternative fixed last mile to end-users. The bundles on offer deliver on our initial target of at least 30% of the Parkhurst homes required to make this a viable alternative," says Vumatel CEO Niel Schoeman.

"Our ambition is not restricted to Parkhurst. We want to roll out to 200 000 houses over the next three to four years, which equates to about 100 suburbs. And we look forward to continued partnerships with companies like Vox Telecom to realise this roll-out plan."

Vumetal had identified the following Johannesburg suburbs for fibre deployment:

Atholl, Beverley, Blairgowrie, Douglasdale, Emmarentia, Forest Town, Fourways, Gallo Manor, Greenside, Houghton Estate, Hurlingham and Hurlingham Manor, Hyde Park, Illovo, Inanda and Chislehurston, Killarney and Riviera, Linden, Lonehill, Melrose and Birdhaven, Melville, Parkhurst, Parkmore, Parktown, Parktown North, Parkwood, Pine Slopes, River Club, Sandhurst, Saxonwold, Upper Houghton, Victory Park and Westcliff.

The suburbs in Cape Town the company has identified are:

Bishopscourt, Camps Bay and Bakoven, Constantia, Fresnaye, Gardens, Mouille Point, Newlands, Oranjezicht, Sea Point, Tamboerskloof and Vredehoek.
