While the world waits for Apple's new iPhone 6 to hit stores, Online Bargains - a local e-commerce merchant - is offering pre-orders of the devices for R16 499, saying they will be available on 25 September.

Last week, Apple unveiled its new flagship devices - the 4.7-nch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus - with the company announcing they would be available in selected markets from 19 September.

Both iPhones will be available in three capacities - 16GB, 64GB and 128GB - with US prices for the iPhone 6 at $199, $299 and $399, respectively, and $299, $399 and $499 (respectively) for the iPhone 6 Plus. These are based on 24-month contracts.

Meanwhile, Apple said customers will need to be patient to get their new devices after a record four million first-day pre-orders were logged, double the number for the iPhone 5 two years ago.

The company said demand had outstripped supply of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which feature larger screens and longer battery life. Deliveries of pre-orders will begin on Friday and will continue through October.
