Transport minister Dipuo Peters says Sanral is a veritable engine room of the nation's economy.

The Department of Transport says the fact that the SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) has been given a clean audit from SA's auditor-general bolsters public confidence in the agency's financial management.

Transport minister Dipuo Peters says the unqualified audit confirms Sanral's financial statements were deemed credible and complied with statutory requirements. "In short, everything was accounted for and all monies were properly spent and managed, despite various challenges that were faced.

"The audit will go a long way in increasing Sanral's transparency and accountability whilst demonstrating commitment to meeting the requirements of the Public Finance Management Act at the state-owned company."

Peters calls the agency a "veritable engine room of the nation's economy" and says, as a credible custodian of taxpayers' money and investor funds, it is imperative there are no deficiencies in internal financial control.

"The South African government, represented by the Ministry of Transport as the sole shareholder and owner of Sanral, wishes to congratulate Sanral's board, its CEO Nazir Alli and his team for the clean audit."

Peters says the audit augurs well for the roads agency's initiatives in transport, education, road safety and community development.
