The H27 is slimmer and lighter than an industrial device and stronger and more robust than a consumer smartphone.

It complies with the specifications expected of a rugged device. The Opticon H27 is dust- and waterproof (IP65), passed the 1.5m drop and shock test and operates in temperatures between -10^0 and 50^0C. It features a 4.3" RFT LCD touch screen (800 x 480 pixels) protected with Gorilla glass v2, signature capture and anti-reflective coating.

The Android 4.2.2-based H-27 delivers a powerful application performance thanks to the 1.5GHz processor, 8GB flash memory and a range of communication possibilities. The high capacity battery (2860mAh) is good for full-shift operation and is hot swappable. Various communication options such as Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, HSPA with data and voice, NFC, GPS and GLONASS enable the mobile worker to provide a better and faster service on site.

"The groupware approach for the Android platform has resulted in readily available low cost development tools," says Stef du Plessis of Osiris Technical Systems. "The added benefit of a device that is more durable than a smartphone brings down the total cost of ownership considerately."

A mobile device would not be complete without a camera and the H27 has a 5.0MP rear-facing camera with auto focus and flash LED.

Opticon has been manufacturing barcode scanners for over 35 years and has now, for the first time, incorporated its barcode scanners into an Android-based device. There is a choice between a 1D barcode scanner and a 2D imager. The H27 complements the company's range of Windows mobile barcode computers.

The rugged design and a tough screen which can also be read outdoors make the H27 suitable for most environments. It is ideal to be used in fields such as logistics, retail, warehousing and healthcare.

"If you have ever felt that you needed to have your computer with you when you were not at your desk, then this is the device for you," adds Du Plessis.

Osiris Technical Systems is the African distributor of Opticon barcode scanners.
