Emcom Wireless announces the appointment of Mr Stefan Skarabis as Chief Technology Officer.

"We are very pleased to confirm the appointment of Mr Stefan Skarabis, a respected industry professional, to the Emcom team," says George Spencer, MD, Emcom Wireless.

"Stefan's enviable track record in the conceptualisation, design and deployment of many large communications networks and associated projects coupled with his significant experience unique to the mission-critical mobile radio communications industry suits the Emcom roadmap perfectly," says Spencer.

"As an industry veteran, Stefan Skarabis adds senior-level technological expertise which will complement our respected technical team in the Chief Technology Officer role to the benefit of our customers," says Deon Roestorff, Emcom Chief Operations Officer.

Skarabis, an electronic engineer with 21 years' industry experience, has worked with companies such as Saab Grintek, Siemens and Nokia Siemens Networks, where he was a key member of bid teams, also, he has hands-on experience in mission-critical mobile radio in the public safety and policing sector while serving with the South African Police Service.

Skarabis graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Engineering at the University of Pretoria in 1993, after which he joined the City of Pretoria as an engineer in its electronic services division.

Before commencing his studies, Skarabis worked as a radio technician at the SA Police Service, where he was responsible for field installations and workshop repairs of two-way radio communication equipment, sirens, public address systems and other electronic accessories. In 1990, he quit his day job to enrol as a full-time student, exchanging his monthly income for study grants, a study loan and casual work income.

"I enjoy helping to introduce technology where it can benefit ordinary people," says Skarabis. "I thrive on the engineering challenges associated with finding simple, practical, cost-effective ways to achieve best-fit solutions utilising technology. I enjoy sharing my skills and expertise with those who will listen and firmly believe that through a combination of theory and years of practical experience, I can add value for Emcom customers," he says.

During his career, Skarabis gained valuable experience in communications network conceptualisation and design, project management, team leadership, preparing and motivating business cases, analysis of client requirements, feasibility studies as well the co-ordination of technical functions.

"Being appointed as Emcom CTO is the achievement of a long-term goal I had set for myself about 15 years ago, and which I have actively pursued via several avenues. I am very excited to finally be part of the Emcom team.

"The next step for me is to meet and exceed all expectations relating to the challenge of this position by becoming a valued contributor to the Emcom senior management team," says Skarabis.

As Emcom Chief Technology Officer, duties include engineering input to all technological decisions, overseeing of Emcom in-house developed products, systems configurations, network and solutions design, bid response management and technical training.
