SA companies open up to handing over e-mail security

Johannesburg, 23 Oct 2014

Managed IT security vendor, Securicom, continues to enjoy impressive year-on-year growth in the interest and adoption of its e-mail security and content management service as evolving e-mail-borne security threats and the increasing complexity of security technologies push more South African companies to outsource e-mail security to competent service providers.

"Despite not being tied into contracts, more than two-thirds of Securicom's installed ePurifier customer base that adopted the service five years ago is still with us.

"More than half of them are SMEs," states Richard Broeke, national sales manager at Securicom.

"This not only demonstrates that local companies are increasingly opening-up to the idea of outsourcing e-mail security, but that the vast majority is seeing the value of it," he explains.

Securicom was the first company in South Africa to introduce e-mail content management and security as a cloud-based service over 15 years ago, with its archiving offering now being almost 10 years old.

"Initially, mindset was a significant barrier, specifically in the archiving space. Companies were reluctant to handover their e-mail security to a third party," says Broeke.

But there has been a marked paradigm shift in recent years.

The complexity of attacks and potential damage to business, as well as lack of adequate in-house resources, are key drivers behind companies adopting a cloud-based model. This, together with the need to cut costs and do more with less, is making more companies turn to cloud service providers that can provide appropriate security at an affordable monthly price.

"Outsourcing e-mail security to the cloud allows companies to cost-effectively access best-of-breed technologies, as well as the expertise that have become essential for managing more sophisticated and ever-changing threats," Broeke continues.

"Companies are increasingly seeking more comprehensive e-mail management solutions that go beyond anti-virus and anti-spam to cover security data loss prevention, archiving and business continuity. Our services meet these needs:

"ePurifier is a complete e-mail security and message management solution encompassing comprehensive message content filtering, anti-spam, recipient validation, anti-phishing and multiple layers of anti-virus.

"Combined with MailVault, Securicom's e-mail archiving and business continuity solution, companies can address their e-mail security, archiving and business continuity requirements holistically.

"And because the solutions are cloud-based, they are extremely cost-effective for companies that don't have the budget to buy and maintain on-premises solutions of the same standard," concludes Broeke.
