Orange Business Services (OBS), the French telco's branch dedicated to business-to-business services, has appointed Giorgio Heiman as vice-president of Africa, effective immediately.

Heiman will share his time between Johannesburg and Geneva in Switzerland, and takes over OBS' African business from Jean-Luc Lasnier, who has retired.

OBS says Heiman brings "significant consulting expertise and experiences in harnessing technology to deliver innovative business solutions, as well as leadership and management of multicultural and geographically dispersed teams" to the position.

He joined the Orange group in 2004 after holding senior management and consulting roles within the telecoms and air transport industries, including specialist in air transport communications and IT, Sita; AT&T and Digital Equipment Corporation.

Heiman previously held a management position at CERN, the European research organisation tasked with operating the world's largest particle physics laboratory.

Heiman graduated with honours from the Department of Experimental Physics at the University of Bologna, Italy, and has co-authored more than 15 publications in scientific journals.

OBS has had a presence on the African continent since 1949 - in different iterations - starting out in the field of commercial air travel. It is established in 40 African countries and has a B2B base of more than 3 750 multinational companies.

Headquartered locally in Sandton, Johannesburg, OBS has major service centres in Egypt and Mauritius.
