Johannesburg, 25 Nov 2014
Wipro (NYSE:WIT), a leading global information technology, consulting and business process services company, today announced that it is providing an opportunity to a select group of employees in South Africa to work at the company's headquarters in India for a period of two months. The employees are all science graduates from Wipro's South Africa internship programme.
Five high-performing individuals from its 2012 internship programme, now full-time employees of Wipro in South Africa, will spend time at the company's Bangalore and Chennai delivery centres and get hands-on experience. The initiative, known as the Wipro Overseas Internship Programme, adds a new dimension to the highly successful local internship programme conducted in a series of batches over a period of six months.
The team will not only get a chance to work on South Africa-based client projects in an offshore capacity but also receive training and mentoring from senior leaders in the company. They will benefit from the accelerated learning associated with international work experience, immersing themselves in the local culture, gain a deeper understanding about the company's history, and learn new ways of engaging with clients in a global work environment. These employees will bring additional skills and knowledge from their work experience in India to new and existing projects in South Africa, adding further value to Wipro's customers in the region.
Shailendra Singh, Business Director for Wipro's Africa Region, said: "Wipro's international internship programme contributes to organisations' goals of attracting the top ICT talent from around the world by providing rich learning and exciting work opportunities. It also furthers the company's vision of supporting clients with world-class talent. Since skills development has always been high on Wipro's agenda, both locally in South Africa and across the globe, this programme fits perfectly, and complements the development programme already in place. As a global company, we wanted to leverage our scale and presence to create the most dynamic learning experience for our top-performing local graduate hires.
"This is the kind of global experience traditionally only available to those at executive level within organisations, therefore, it is an incredible opportunity to be able to leverage in the early stages of one's career," added Singh.
Kulile Mcebula, one of the chosen graduates noted: "I am really looking forward to the learning experience in India where I will meet my team of 'offshore' colleagues in person and have the opportunity to work in a different country. I have already gained much experience in software testing and I am excited to further expand my skills and experience through this learning opportunity. The move from my home in an Eastern Cape village to Johannesburg has certainly been a good one, and I am now ready to experience life, work and a different culture in India."
