Telkom says its FTTH products come in response to customers' growing appetite for media-rich online content.

Telkom has announced the commercial availability of its 20Mbps, 40Mbps and 100Mbps fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) offers in selected areas in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Western Cape.

Homes in Groenkloof, Houghton, Eldoraigne, Parktown and Westcliff in Gauteng; Chelmsfordville, Dawncrest, and Winston Park in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Clairmont, Bishops Court and Plattekloof in the Western Cape now have access to broadband over Telkom's fibre network.

Telkom's chief operating officer Brian Armstrong says fibre has the potential to transmit information at "virtually unlimited speed and capacity" - allowing for continuous upgrades to the company's broadband offers.

Armstrong explains that Telkomm's FTTH technology involves the use of a pure Ethernet connection, eliminating the requirement for intermediate equipment such as modems. "This results in a much more stable and reliable service."

Customers in the said areas can sign up for Telkom's promotional 24-month fibre offers, which include a 20Mbps line with 50GB data package for R999 per month; 40Mbps line with 100GB package at R1 299 per month and 100MBps line with 200 GB of data for R1 799 per month.

All of these packages include a free WiFi router, a 3GB mailbox, e-mail accounts with five aliases and unlimited Night Surfer data, says Telkom.

Armstrong says Telkom's FTTH products come in the wake of customers' growing appetite for media-rich online content.

Earlier this year Telkom announced the start of its fibre rollout to over 20 suburbs across SA - a project that will take until March 2015.

Customers in the areas already identified as part of the rollout can register their interest for Telkom's FTTH offers here. The company says it will inform those who register interest as soon as the network is available in their area. Telkom's fibre coverage map can be viewed here.

"Customers can also use this demand register to indicate demand in areas not currently on Telkom's current fibre rollout. This information will be used to inform the next phase of Telkom's fibre infrastructure deployment."
