Taiwanese technology company Asus has appointed Andre Goosen to the position of country service manager, a new role created in line with its increased focus on after-sales service.

This comes about two months after Asus country manager Jeff Kuo said the company was assessing the local market to establish viability and demand for a smartphone offering. Asus had already launched its handsets - in the form of its Zenfone range of devices - in other markets.

Regional service account manager Luuk Dobbe says, as Asus' market share in SA has grown during the course of the year, the company has established the need for a dedicated country service manager to manage relationships with third-party repair centres, and to work with customers.

Goosen joins Asus from Toshiba, where he was a service manager for four years. Prior to that, he worked at NRS Technologies and Rectron.

Part of Goosen's new portfolio, says the company, will be to expand Asus' base of third-party service providers, both in SA and in Southern African countries in which the brand is represented.

The company says, while it already has a service partner in Zimbabwe, Goosen will seek to establish relationships with service providers in Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland.

Previously known primarily for gaming and motherboards, Asus more recently made a mark in the laptop and tablet segments. According to Kuo, Asus is seeing 100% growth in its laptop business in SA.

Asus has about 5.3% market share in the South African laptop segment - where IDC ranks it number five in the country.
