Parktown North has been earmarked as the next neighbourhood to deploy a high-speed fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network, with construction set to start in January.

According to the Parktown North Ratepayers' and Residents' Association (PNRA), Vumatel has received support to lead the project. The company's proposal includes a once-off installation fee of R1 500 per home, with a free line rental of 4Mbps.

Vumatel is also deploying FTTH in neighbouring Parkhurst and the company has identified 35Johannesburg neighbourhoods for its fibre installation.

Lee-Ann Louverdis, chairperson of the PNRA, said the benefits of transparency in pricing, increased competition and greater consumer choice "far outweigh the temporary disruption of civil works during the construction phase".

She added the community will enjoy benefits arising from greater choice and competitive ISP offerings - "both of which will undoubtedly improve the desirability of living in Parktown North".

According to the PNRA, Vumatel will also provide public WiFi access at shopping centres in the neighbourhood. Residents will have WiFi access using their home broadband account details.
