Mobile advertising company Thumbtom has launched an Android-based application, aiming to draw users and businesses to the platform by encouraging engagement with advertisements pushed to smartphones.

According to the company, adverts are displayed in a smartphone's "lock screen" and users earn one point every time they unlock their devices. Interacting with the ads on display can earn up to five points.

As points are accumulated, they can be redeemed for rewards including airtime, data bundles and vouchers from retailers including iTunes, Wakaberry and Ster Kinekor. A 150MB data bundle would cost 1 500 points, according to Thumbtom.

Grant Reynolds, MD of Thumbtom, says the platform aims to attract advertisers by encouraging users to explore the content pushed to their devices. Users can also invite others to download the app as well as interact with polls and surveys.

The swipe functionality allows up to 10 different marketing actions, according to the company, including getting directions, dialing numbers as well as buying the content advertised.

"At rest, each smartphone transforms to become a mobile billboard. Consumers can be presented with powerful images that ultimately drive sales," the company said.
