News facts:

* Powerful, scalable platform for big data combines the convenience of pre-configured and pre-tested hardware with the economic advantages of open source software

Munich, 05 Jan 2015

Enterprises of all sizes have realised the opportunities presented by better understanding and leveraging big data already within their organisation, but often find it a major obstacle in actually taking the first step towards implementing a solution.

Fujitsu today addresses this by introducing PRIMEFLEX for Hadoop, a new, dedicated solution developed to seamlessly enable customers to harness big data and start taking advantage of actionable analytics.

As organisations continue to digitalise their business processes, actionable analytics from existing and selected external data sources becomes more and more of a business-critical factor. Fujitsu's new PRIMEFLEX for Hadoop integrated system provides an easier than ever gateway to big data, and supports Fujitsu's ongoing focus on helping customers create more business-centric data centres.

Fujitsu is targeting finance, IT management and marketing business units as the functional areas within companies across all industries that are most likely to gain from process improvement through the use and exploitation of big data. Through integrating Datameer's powerful analytics application, Fujitsu is enabling users to start tapping into big data without needing to involve IT staff in setting up complex and time-consuming processes.

The latest appliance to join the line-up of more than 20 workload-specific integrated systems under the new PRIMEFLEX brand, PRIMEFLEX for Hadoop is a powerful, scalable platform for big data which combines the convenience of pre-configured and pre-tested hardware with the economic advantages of open source software.

Fujitsu has developed PRIMEFLEX for Hadoop to simplify and tame big data. The powerful, dedicated all-in-one hardware cluster is designed to integrate with existing hardware infrastructures, introducing distributed parallel processing based on Cloudera Enterprise Hadoop. This is an open-source software framework which gathers, processes and analyses data from various sources, then puts together and presents the big picture on how to act on the information gathered.

Fujitsu provides its customers with access to extensive, end-to-end strategic consulting capabilities in maximising the effectiveness of big data, analytics and Hadoop. Furthermore, customers can benefit from Fujitsu integration and maintenance, plus system support and life cycle management services. In order to simplify big data concepts and streamline project implementations, Fujitsu has created a European based big data centre of expertise that will help customers gain the full benefits of big data projects, and offers a range of PRIMEFLEX integrated systems to achieve this, including the in-memory-data grid solution PRIMEFLEX for Terracotta BigMemory and the In-Memory Database solution PRIMEFLEX for SAP HANA.

Fujitsu offers different versions of PRIMEFLEX for Hadoop, such as versions optimised for storage-intensive tasks, as well as processing-intensive tasks. Solutions are packaged into complete systems with a single part number.

Harald Bernreuther, Director, Global Infrastructure Solutions, Fujitsu
"With the PRIMEFLEX for Hadoop Big Data appliance, Fujitsu is offering compelling new economic arguments for customers who have already realised that accessing big data presents them with huge business advantages, but were put off by the high cost of entry, and the difficulty in actually deploying data analytics to produce meaningful output. By creating a dedicated PRIMEFLEX integrated system for harnessing big data, as an enterprise data hub, we are making big data more accessible and easier than ever."

Dr Stefan Sauer, Senior Researcher, University of Paderborn, says: "PRIMEFLEX for Hadoop is the ideal platform to foster innovation in big data use cases. For instance, in an analytics-based real-time shopping assistant, it is mission critical to manage and analyse big data volumes at high speed. At our industry-joint Software Innovation Campus Paderborn, we help to develop innovative models for all user types to enable new shopping experiences."

Tim Stevens, Vice President, Corporate and Business Development, Cloudera, states: "As Hadoop continues to become more mainstream, data-driven organisations are rapidly adopting it as the core of their enterprise data hubs where we are seeing increased demand for certified Fujitsu solutions. We are pleased to partner with Fujitsu to ensure our joint customers have access to flexible deployment options, including entry-level appliance and scale-out rack solutions on premises and in the cloud."

Kimberly Martin, vice-president, Business Development and Worldwide Channels, Datameer, says: "Datameer and Fujitsu's partnership accelerates the time to insight and helps customers discover new ways to extract business value in big data. By combining tested, pre-configured Fujitsu hardware, Cloudera's Hadoop platform and Datameer's powerful analytics application, customers will see higher returns on investment in big data use cases such as customer analytics, operational analytics and new products and services."

Pricing and availability

From 15 December, PRIMEFLEX for Hadoop is available to order as a ready-to-run integrated system for on-premises use. In 2015, Fujitsu will introduce a service offering version running in the Fujitsu Cloud.
