Sony delays third-quarter results

Tokyo, 26 Jan 2015

Sony said on Friday it would delay the official submission of its third-quarter results due to the massive cyber attack on Sony Pictures in November.

The "highly sophisticated and damaging cyber attack" caused "a serious disruption of [Sony Pictures'] network systems [...] including the destruction of network hardware", and as a result most of Sony Pictures' financial and accounting applications will not be functional until early February 2015, the entertainment company said.

Sony filed an application with the Financial Services Agency of Japan (FSA) asking the deadline for its earnings report be moved from 16 February 2015 to 31 March 2015.

In the meantime, Sony will hold a news conference on 4 February, the originally-scheduled date of its results announcement, to give updated financial forecasts for the quarter.

The cyber attack on Sony Pictures leaked thousands of sensitive documents, including embarrassing internal e-mails and unreleased films, and caused Sony to cancel the release of its upcoming film The Interview due to threats of violence on theatres scheduled to screen the film. Sony subsequently released the film online.
