Neil Lazarus wants to focus on other business opportunities.

Blue Label says advocate Neil Lazarus - who is qualified as senior counsel - has stepped down as a non-executive director.

At the same time, Lazarus relinquishes his role as chairman of the remuneration committee and member of the nomination, social, ethics, transformation and investment committees.

His resignation takes effect today.

In a statement, Blue Label says Lazarus "decided to resign to enable him to concentrate on other business interests and to pursue other opportunities".

The listed telecoms company adds: "Neil [Lazarus] has made an outstanding contribution to Blue Label and the board. The board both respects and appreciates the unwavering commitment and skill which Neil has invested and demonstrated in the performance of his duties in his capacity as an advisor to the company and as a non-executive director."

Lazarus graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1981 with a BA LLB degree, says Blue Label's Web site. After completing articles, he was admitted as an attorney in 1983.

The company notes Lazarus was admitted as an advocate in 1984 and practised at the Johannesburg bar. He was appointed as senior counsel by then president Nelson Mandela in 1998.

Lazarus has also served as an acting judge. As an advocate, he specialised in corporate restructures, mergers and acquisitions, and was involved in some major corporate reorganisations both locally and internationally.

Upon leaving the profession in 2000, he became a director of Corpcapital Limited, establishing its corporate finance business.
