The CraigPark Residents Association (CRA) has released fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) prices, citing savings of between R760 and R1 500 compared to "other" Internet service providers (ISPs).

The CRA, which encompasses Johannesburg's northern suburbs of Craighall and Craighall Park, started offering FTTH connectivity last year, as part of a security initiative similar to one announced by its Parkhurst counterpart around the same time, in the former part of 2014.

FTTH pricing starts from R570 for 100GB, and goes up to R1 400 for an uncapped service (on per month contracts). Residents will pay R795 for 300GB per month and R920 for 500GB per month. Costs include a 100Mbps line rental.

The said costs are as per the Fibrehoods project, a joint venture between the Waterfall Investment Company and CSS Tactical, which is building an aerial fibre network in the following Johannesburg suburbs: Craighall, Craighall Park, Atholl, Illovo, Inanda, Winston Ridge and Elton Hill.

By way of comparison, MTN offers a 100Gbps line with 100GB of data at R1 389 per month, while MWEB offers 300GB on a 100Gbps line for R1 449 per month.

MTN first revealed its FTTH plans in April last year, when it demonstrated the new high-speed service to residents of Monaghan Farm, an upmarket gated estate just north of Lanseria Airport.

At the time, MTN said it was rolling out "aggressive deployment" of FTTH to high-density urban areas, like upmarket gated communities, boomed-off suburbs and high-rise buildings.

MWEB is one of six ISPs working with fibre broadband provider Vumatel on a pilot project in the Johannesburg suburb of Parkhurst to roll out fibre to the home.
