Wipro Africa's business development director Shailendra Singh says skills development is a core element of Wipro's SA strategy.

Wipro, the New York-listed IT, consulting and business process services company, will invest R3.8 million in skills development and job creation in South Africa.

This investment will be used to hire local skills, as well as develop skills. Wipro plans to hire 55 science and technology graduates, fresh out of university, for its operations in South Africa over the course of the next six months.

Wipro has a workforce of over 150 000 staff that service clients in more than 175 cities across six continents.

Graduates will be shortlisted based on academic performance, tests and interviews. Once recruited, they will then be enrolled in a six-month training programme, which involves three months of classroom training and another three months of on-the-job training, and will take place via Wipro's projects in South Africa.

Shailendra Singh, business director for Wipro in Africa, says: "Job creation and skills development are vital imperatives for businesses in South Africa. With this programme, Wipro provides local graduates an opportunity to train and build a career in the global information technology industry."

Singh notes the graduate hiring programme is a "core element of Wipro's growth strategy in South Africa and is a part of its global initiative to increasingly hire local talent in its markets of operation".

Wipro, which has been present in South Africa since 2007, plans to hire students from South African universities every year.
