Open source software specialist Obsidian Systems has announced the next event in its ongoing networking and information series, or Free Beer Sessions, will take place on 12 March.

The theme for the year will be: "The power of open source" (organisers have neither confirmed nor denied that it may have something to do with 'Dutch courage' and being able to handle... open source).

Web developer and OS evangelist at Mozilla, Schalk Neethling has been confirmed as the speaker for this event.

He has a passion for standards, accessibility, usability and open source, and will impart his knowledge and experience to the audience.

Free Beer Sessions are already well established, and afford guests an opportunity to network about the latest open source software (OSS) trends.

Obsidian has had speakers both local and international to inspire and share their experiences on the journey of open source.

The free beverages aside, organisers are eager for guests to share their experiences with open source principles, discuss ideas and the realities of innovation within South Africa's growing OSS community.

"Free Beer Sessions are about crafting open source technology while having fun, food and, of course, free beer!" says Muggie van Staden, MD at Obsidian Systems.

Obsidian Systems was started in 1995 as a modest services business targeting businesses and organisations looking to integrate and leverage off Linux infrastructure.

The company strives to bring three legs to the South African market. The first being certified products, the second being local consulting and support skills, and the third being vendor-certified training and certification. With these three elements, any organisation can trust the enterprise open source solution provided management claim.

Agenda:

5pm-6pm: Beat the traffic and welcome drinks
6pm-7pm: Registration, food and beer tasting
7pm-8pm: Speakers
8pm-9pm: Drinks and networking

Speakers confirmed to date include Paul Thompson, Suse International, and Schalk Neethling, Mozilla evangelist, hosted by Muggie van Staden, from Obsidian Systems, at Investec, Sandton.
