Sony has unveiled the long-term evolution (LTE)-enabled version of its Xperia E4 smartphone, which was launched two weeks ago.

Dubbed the Xperia E4g, Sony's latest phone - which it positions as its cheapest mid-range phone - has a slightly smaller display size (4.7-inches, as opposed to its 3G counterpart's 5-inch screen) and runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

It has the same qHD, 540 x 960 pixel resolution, on-board storage (8GB) and RAM (1GB) as the E4, but features a 1.5GHz Quad-core processor, where the 3G version features a 1.3GHz Quad-core processor.

The Xperia E4g features a 5MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera, as well as a 2300mAh battery, which Tom McNulty, VP of value category business management at Sony Mobile, claims gives users up to two days of battery life.

Like the E4, the E4g comes in black and white colour options and features a scratch-resistant screen.

"Xperia E4 set out to bring premium features to lower-tier devices. Xperia E4g brings [the same] but with super-fast 4G LTE connectivity," says McNulty.

The device will be available in SA in the second quarter of 2015 and retail pricing will be announced closer to launch timing. The E4's predecessor, the Xperia E3, retails for around R1 800.
