Citrix and Google extended their relationship, with Citrix yesterday revealing it will provide XenMobile support for Android for Work.

The relationship between the companies dates back to 2011 when they joined forces to deliver business apps for Chromebooks.

XenMobile is a Citrix-powered enterprise mobility tool that delivers mobile device management, application management, mobile content management and secures mobile productivity apps for organisations.

Google unveiled Android for Work this week in a move to capitalise on the rising BYOD trend and boost the use of its Android operating system in the workplace.

The company also recently engaged Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry for mobile device management and security of Android devices.

With an 81.5% market share, market research firm IDC says Google's Android is the world's most popular mobile operating system.

Android for Work will offer enterprises and their employees a secure area within their Android phones and tablets that can be managed by a company with dedicated policies and easily accessed by a user, says Google.

With Android for Work, business apps are visually set apart from personal Android apps through a small suitcase icon.

The Internet giant will deploy Android for Work as a native work profile that can be enabled within the latest Android 5.0 (Lollipop) devices, as well as a separate app for devices running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and Android 4.4 (KitKat).

According to Google and Citrix, this partnership builds on the multi-year collaboration between the companies that includes virtual app and desktop delivery on Chrome devices and existing enterprise mobility management support for Android smartphones and tablets.

"With complementary visions and strategies, Citrix and Google are collaborating on a number of initiatives in mobility, app virtualisation and cloud to deliver a comprehensive best in class, secure mobile workspace solution that offers customers the most seamless, business-ready experience on Android and Chrome devices over any network," says Brian Dye, group vice-president and general manager of mobile platforms at Citrix.
