Samsung claims its new S6 range is tougher than other handsets on the market.

Samsung's new flagship handsets, the S6 and S6 edge, will be available in SA on 10 April, with the top of the line device retailing for between R13 000 and R14 000.

The handsets were unveiled at a gala launch this evening in Barcelona, ahead of the annual Mobile World Congress, which kicks off in earnest tomorrow.

Speaking at this evening's event, CEO JK Shin said the new phones, the S6 and the S6 edge - which boasts the world's first curved screen - are the most advanced phones in the world, with the fastest processor and most advanced camera.

The new handsets also have powerful security for data protection, built in wireless charging and its answer to payments, Samsung Pay, said Shin. "They are better than anything before, next is now."

The handsets, which do away with removable batteries, will launch in 20 countries on 10 April, including in SA. ITWeb understands final pricing is still being negotiated, but the top-end edge, with 128GB of memory, will sell for between R13 000 and R14 000.

Apple's latest iPhone, which Samsung says is inferior to its new handsets, launched at a cost of R9 899 for the 16GB handset, the 64GB device for R10 999 and the 128GB unit at a price of R12 599. However, the iStore also offered a cash back voucher of R4 400 against the initial price.

Samsung's phone, which it claims is "super tough", makes use of Corning Gorilla Glass 4, and its metal jacket is 50% stronger than other phones, which means it "will not bend," said Samsung. At the same time as Samsung launched the new phone, it also launched the new Gear VR.
