The roof of the Great Westerford Building in Newlands, Cape Town, where Teraco, Hetzner and Korbitec, among other tech companies, are located, caught fire this morning.

The fire is currently under control and is unrelated to the other fires that are located on the South Peninsula.

Teraco CEO Lex van Wyk released a statement saying the building was evacuated.

"We are monitoring the environment from our Johannesburg and Durban sites, and doing as much as we can to maintain uptime.

"The fire is on the roof, we are located in the basement; however, if it spreads we may have to shut power to assist the fire-fighters to do their work."

Teraco's Cape Town data centre is the company's oldest, and is based in Rondebosch. It first opened to clients in early 2009. Teraco has said it is "the most connected building in the city of Cape Town".

MWeb CEO Derek Hershaw says some of the Internet service provider's national and international network terminates at Teraco, "so we are obviously concerned about that". So far, he says, the fire has had no impact on MWeb's service. "Hopefully that won't change."
