After Android officially released Android 5.1, an update to Lollipop, some users experienced app crashes, launcher issues, and overall poor experience.

Google's Android Open Source Code issue tracker forums were filled with memory leak reports towards the end of last week, after the update was issued last Monday.

GSM Arena reported user issues, caused after the update, were because of a memory leak in the background. It also added the Android team had quietly fixed the issue internally, though Google remains uncertain about when the fix will be released to the public, although the GSMA suspects this is likely to happen when update 5.1.1 is issued.

Lollipop is designed to run on almost any device, from smart watches to new smart TVs and in cars. The new update includes support for multiple SIM cards, device protection and high-definition voice on compatible phones.

Device protection will keep a lost or stolen device locked until the user signs in with their Google account; even if the device is reset to factory settings.

Android Platform VP Dave Burke said: "This feature will be available on most Android phones and tablets shipped with Android 5.1 in addition to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9."
