MWR is running its cyber security challenge, for the fifth year, and is calling on South Africans to enter, as there is a chance of winning a trip to this year's Hackfu event in the UK.

MWR, a UK-based cyber security company with a local arm, notes the Hackfu online challenge receives many entries from international hackers, but has historically not been played locally, despite the need for more local skills.

The security company notes the challenge is now open, with entries closing on 30 April.

On MWR's Web site, it notes: "The event provides the opportunity for experts to compete in a fight to the digital death."

Challenges teams will face include network infrastructure, Web applications, hardware reversing, operating systems and logic puzzles, all the way through to bespoke systems like message queues and SAP.

Although Hackfu is by invitation only, hackers can win their way to an invite by competing in this year's open challenge. The challenge, which will be explained in more detail in a "mission briefing transcript", involves "saving the planet before it's too late" from the clutches of the infamous Baron Yapster, says MWR.

The Hackfu prize includes entry to the event, a roof to sleep under for three nights - although no beds - food and souvenirs. MWR aims to give away 10 tickets to the event this year but the exact number will depend on how many people solve the challenges and how good the submitted write-ups are.
